Assignment
We were given the task to design a digital product as a solution to help avoid or reduce obesity in people. It impacts people for various age groups, so we could choose our own target user group and customize the solution according to the needs of the user group.
Process
In this project the aim was to learn to solve a real life problem by applying human-centered design process. We used the double diamond as design method.

Each group member conducted individual secondary research on obesity. We chose our target user group and decided that it would be people in their 20-30's with an BMI between 25-35. We used interviews as a primary research method. Each team member found relevant subjects we knew personally to interview and used the list of questions the group had decided on.
We used Affinity Diagramming to sort out the information from our interviews and created a persona to fit the project.

Mind map

We used design methods to generate ideas for our final digital solution. After discussing the visual design, we started sketching wireframes on paper.

We used Heuristic evaluation to detect usability problems with our paper prototypes before user testing. After this, we started prototyping in Figma to gather more precise responses based on aesthetics, interaction and usability. After usability testing we improved the Figma wireframes and made final touches before ending up with our final product!

Solution
Our final idea is an app called Surge. It is designed to help the user resist cravings by providing healthy alternative activities. Surge also tracks these cravings so that the user can easily identify patterns in their eating habits.

My role and reflections
This subject was the first proper introduction to design process, more specifically the double diamond method. I learned how to define an issue, do thorough research and come up with a solution. I also used Figma for the first time and learned how to navigate the program.
The topic of the assignment was a real-life problem and it was very interesting to work with. The biggest challenge for me was the research phase. We interviewed overweight people we knew personally and because the topic can be taboo, I wondered how I could make the interview subject feel comfortable. It turned out that it was no big deal asking them questions about obesity and overweight. The topic need to be enlightened, and this project taught me that more taboo topics needs attention and do not need to be scary to work with.
After this project, I have learned the importance of well-done secondary research. I also learned to hold a professional interview, but also how to make the person feel comfortable and safe.
